Can I see a chiropractor on the NHS?

James Scrimshaw - Chiropractor James Scrimshaw Chiropractor

We are fortunate enough to have a government and taxpayer funded healthcare service in the UK. It provides some incredible care to a whopping 1.3 million people every day*, however they don’t provide all the services we need. So where does the NHS stand with providing a chiropractor and chiropractic treatment these days?

So, in 2024, can I get Chiropractic through the NHS?

There’s a bit of a catch-22, because the NHS sees chiropractic as a complementary treatment rather than a medical treatment so therefore, it’s not available through the NHS. The bad news is, there are a lot of patients with musculoskeletal disorders that place a heavy burden on the NHS further down the line. Why? These people aren’t referred to specialists such as chiropractors that could help them earlier on in their diagnosis, so they return needing expensive treatment or surgery. If the correct specialist is put in place before the situation progresses, these expenses could be avoided.

What are the benefits to seeing a chiropractor privately?

There are huge benefits to seeing a private chiropractor:

– You are seen quickly and fast action is taken
– Private chiropractors are judged by their results. Our reputation comes from handling the case well and referring on if needed to another specialist
– They have more flexibility to provide individualised treatment plans tailored to your specific needs and goals
– They offer different types of manual therapies or complementary treatments that are not available through the NHS

What can a chiropractor do for me and is it safe for the elderly?

Chiropractors help us diagnosis, treat and prevent a number of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal manipulation or adjustment managing headaches, neck pain and shoulder pain, arm pain and leg pain, mid back and low back pain and all forms of sports injuries.

Chiropractic treatment consists of a variety of joint stretches, tractions and muscle release techniques which are designed to stimulate your body into healing the damaged area. It’s safe and beneficial for men women and children of all ages and our techniques vary from extremely gentle to more vigorous depending on your body size and shape, and your gender and age. Chiropractic treatment is a natural, drug-free treatment that is safe and effective for the whole family including the elderly population. We use much gentler techniques and technologies to help reduce pain and improve function in the elderly.

What conditions are treatable with Chiropractic?

How do I book in with a Chiropractor? How do I know if they are the right person for me?

Look at someone local to where you live, as you will need to see them over a number of weeks/months. Make sure you do your homework and look at the chiropractors websites, social media profiles, reviews online, ask around for recommendations.

Here, at CURA our emphasis is on an accurate diagnosis, identifying the cause, good quality treatment and excellent preventative care. We move patient towards knowing more about their problem or signposting them to other specialists if required, in order to achieve their goals.

Alongside the treatment we look at your lifestyle, including exercise and nutrition, and suggest changes which reduce further stress on the damaged area. Specific exercise and building core strength will both be a key feature of your recovery.

As a chiropractor based in Bristol, we can help you on your road to recovery.
